On October 14th and 15th, 2017, a conference organized by Ben Eklof (Indiana University), Igor Fedyukin (Higher School of Economics (Moscow), Tatiana Saburova (Higher School of Economics, Indiana University), Elena Vishlenkova (Higher School of Economics, Moscow) was held at the Indiana University Europe Gateway (Berlin) with the aim of seeking new approaches to the history of Russian education. As a starting point, participants were encouraged to consider the applicability to education studies of James C. Scott's book, Seeing like a State. How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed (1998), in particular the concept of «high modernism» and the effort stemming from this mindset to transform society in accordance with its tenets.
