The Russian Studies Workshop of the Russian and East European Institute is prepared to award at least one (1) dissertation write-up fellowship for use in Spring 2021. The fellowship will include a $10,000 stipend, coverage of G901 fees, and coverage of health insurance. It is intended to support one semester of full-time writing in which the recipient will not be engaged in other employment. The application deadline has now passed (October 21, 2020).
The fellowship is intended for applicants who are pursuing a degree in the social sciences and have finished all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, received approval for their research proposal, and completed all formal components of their dissertation field research or data collection. In addition, the topic of the fellow’s dissertation should address Imperial, Soviet, or post-Soviet Russia. Only applicants who do not have a full fellowship in place for Spring 2021 will be considered. In addition, students who have already received a dissertation write-up fellowship from REEI are not eligible for this award.
The fellowship will be granted on the basis of the scholarly potential of the applicant, the quality and scholarly importance of the proposed work and its importance to the development of scholarship in the social sciences on Russian or the former Soviet Union. Heavy emphasis will be placed on the recommendation of the applicant's dissertation advisor with respect to the applicant’s prospects for completing and defending the dissertation at the end of the one semester fellowship or soon thereafter.
